Blu-Ray Disk Technology’S Support To Audio Encoders

02.04.10

imageThe high definition DVD disk is capable of storing 30GB of information even after using its both sides and on the other hand the storage ability of blu-ray disk reaches 50GB (25GB per side). The current CD and the DVD tape format use the red lazer for reading and recording the information onto the disk. Wavelength of DVD is 650nm and that of the CD disk format is 780nm. Wavelength has been reduced further in the new disk technology of blu-ray which was introduced by Philips and Sony. Wavelength of blu-ray is 405 nanometers. The reason to use blue laser in the blu-ray format is its shorter wavelength. Blu-ray technology is able to record large volumes of HD sound and videos as well. Color of the lazer used in blu-ray technology is somewhat blu-violet with wavelength shorter that red lazer. The most powerful advantage of the blu-ray disc format in comparison to the normal red lazer is its capability of recording more data volume keeping the disk sizes same as the CD and DVD disk size. The picture quality is also clearer with vividness and sharper colors as well. Spot size required by the blue-lazer is also smaller. Pickup aperture of blue lazer is 0.85 nanometers. Density of the blu-ray disk is very high that helps to fit 25GB data on each side of bluray disc making total storage of 50 GB. Blu-ray technology is the optical storage format’s new future. The advantages and benefits provided by the blu-ray disk technology are far beyond that of the DVD format. Blu-ray technology supports large recording capacity (25GB) on same physical size disk as of the DVD disk. So it makes it 50GB when data is stored on both blu-ray disks’ sides (as 25GB for each layer). HD video is supported by the blu-ray technology with the help of modern encoders. Video (1920 x 1080p) is supported with VC-1, ACV and MPEG2 coding schemes. Higher video quality is enabled by the VC1 and ACV with lower bit-rate in comparison to the common MPEG2 encoder. The latest audio encoders are supported by the blu-ray disk technology that includes the DTS, Dolby True-HD, DTS-HD and Dolby Digital (multi channel). These audio encoders on the blu-ray disk can be utilized for up to eight audio channels (7.1). Enhanced interactivity (Java based) along with internet connectivity and common menus (DVD like) are also supported by the blu-ray disc technology. An open platform is provided by the blu-ray format for the Java written connected and interactive applications. It is very much clear that at the end of the high definition DVD and blu-ray disk format war, the optical disk format’s future is the blu-ray technology. Games can also be played using the blu-ray disk players and are also capable of supporting the online simple games because of their enough horsepower. Blu-ray disk format along with more capacity provides new interactivity level as well. Blu-ray technology provides easy connectivity to the internet and helps the users in instant downloading of subtitles and other common features of movies as well. With blu-ray technology the consumers can record HD-TV without any deterioration in the quality and can skip right away to any spot on the blu-ray disk. One program can be recorded while another program is being watched on the disk.
